Definition
An ICP, or ideal customer profile, is a clear description of the kind of company that gets the most value from what you sell and is most likely to buy. It usually covers industry, company size, the problem they have and the signs they are ready to solve it.
An ICP describes a company. A buyer persona describes a person inside it. You need both, but they are different: the ICP says which accounts to go after, the persona says who to talk to there. An ICP is not a wish list of the biggest logos. It is based on who has actually succeeded with you, and it is narrow on purpose.
A B2B example: a compliance software company defines its ICP as mid-sized healthcare providers with more than one location and no in-house compliance lead. Every lead magnet, newsletter topic and nurture email is written with that company in mind.
Why it matters for B2B email
Email only works when the right people are on the list. A clear ICP tells you which lead magnets to build, which segments to create and which signups to welcome versus ignore. Without it, a B2B list fills with the wrong readers, and every metric after that looks better than the pipeline it produces.
