Email format comparator
Compare newsletters, nurture sequences and lifecycle email side by side: who gets them, what starts them, and when they end.
What this tool tells you and when to use it
The email format comparator puts the three formats B2B teams mix up next to each other: the newsletter, the nurture sequence and lifecycle email. For each one it shows who it is sent to, what starts it, when it is sent, the job it does, when it ends, and an example.
The short version: a newsletter is a recurring editorial send to subscribers on a schedule. A nurture sequence is a planned series that helps someone make a decision, started by an action like a download or a demo request. Lifecycle email responds to a contact's behaviour or status, such as an upgrade or a period of inactivity. They overlap. A welcome sequence, for example, both nurtures a new lead and responds to a signup event.
Use the comparator when you are deciding which format a new idea belongs in, when a team is using the same word for two different things, or when you are choosing what to set up first. Most small B2B teams do not need all three on day one. Start with the one that addresses a real gap: no regular contact with the list means a newsletter; leads going quiet after a download means a nurture sequence; customers slipping away unnoticed means lifecycle email. The guide behind this tool covers the full reasoning and a reference table.
Use the tool
| Criterion | Newsletter | Nurture sequence | Lifecycle email |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sent to | Subscribers or a chosen segment | A specific segment (e.g. new leads, a webinar list) | Contacts who meet the event or status criteria |
| Triggered by | A regular calendar schedule | Joining that segment | Their behavior or status, with defined eligibility rules |
| Timing | Recurring schedule agreed with subscribers | Planned timeline, sometimes with branches or exit rules | After a trigger, with any defined delay and eligibility rules |
| Job | Stay relevant. Keep the relationship alive. | Build readiness toward a specific decision. | Respond to where they are in the relationship right now. |
| When it ends | Continues while there is a useful editorial purpose. | They convert, disengage, or the sequence completes. | The message or relevant workflow completes. |
| Example | "The B2B Brief: Issue #12" | "3 things to check before your renewal" | "Still thinking about the Growth plan?" |
Where this comes from
This tool was built for the guide Newsletter vs. nurture sequence vs. lifecycle email, which explains the reasoning behind each option and what to check after you start. It suggests a starting point from a simple planning rule, not from measured results.
