Welcome sequence

A welcome sequence is the short series of emails a person gets right after they join your list.

Definition

A welcome sequence is the short series of emails a person gets right after they join your list. It introduces who you are, sets expectations and gives them a reason to open the next email.

It is usually three to five emails over the first week or two. The first one delivers whatever they signed up for. The rest explain what you believe, show your best work, and point to one sensible next step. A welcome sequence is not a product tour for existing customers, and it is not a sales pitch delivered five times. It is for new subscribers who barely know you yet.

A B2B example: a cybersecurity consultancy sends a new subscriber the checklist they asked for, then an email on the one mistake it sees most often, then a short story about how a client fixed that mistake, then an invite to reply with their own situation.

Why it matters for B2B email

The first few days after signup are when attention is highest. People remember why they joined. A good welcome sequence uses that window to earn the second open, so the subscriber keeps reading your newsletter later instead of forgetting who you are. Without one, a new signup often goes cold before your next send.
