Double opt-in

Double opt-in means a new subscriber has to confirm their email address before they are added to your list.

Definition

Double opt-in means a new subscriber has to confirm their email address before they are added to your list. They sign up, receive a confirmation email, and click a link in it. Only then are they subscribed.

Single opt-in skips the confirmation step and adds the address straight away. Double opt-in gives a smaller list, because some people never click the confirmation. In return, every address is real, typed correctly and belongs to someone who wanted in. It is not a legal requirement everywhere, but it is often the safer choice, and it stops bots and typos from polluting your list.

A B2B example: a procurement software company sees many fake signups from its gated report page. It switches to double opt-in. The list grows more slowly, but bounces drop and the welcome sequence goes only to people who meant to join.

Why it matters for B2B email

B2B lists are judged on quality, not size. A few hundred confirmed buyers are worth more than thousands of unverified addresses that bounce and hurt deliverability. Double opt-in trades a little growth for a list you can trust, and it makes every later metric more honest. It also gives you a clear record that each person asked to be there.
