List hygiene

List hygiene is the ongoing work of keeping your email list accurate and made of people who want to hear from you.

Definition

List hygiene is the ongoing work of keeping your email list accurate and made of people who want to hear from you. It means removing dead addresses, fixing bad data and dealing with subscribers who have gone silent.

In practice, it includes removing addresses that bounce, honoring unsubscribes right away, merging duplicates and running re-engagement emails to people who have not opened in a long time. Subscribers who still do not respond are removed or paused. List hygiene is not about cutting your list for its own sake. It is about making sure the people you count are people you can actually reach.

A B2B example: a company's list includes contacts from three years of events. Many have changed jobs, so their old work addresses bounce. A quarterly cleanup removes those and sends a 'still want these?' email to the quiet ones.

Why it matters for B2B email

Work email addresses go stale fast because people change jobs. A B2B list that is never cleaned fills up with bounces and ghosts, which drags down deliverability for everyone still reading. Regular hygiene keeps metrics honest and protects the inbox placement of the emails that drive revenue. It is routine work, but skipping it is expensive.
